About the PDF Metadata Editor

See and change a PDF's document details: title, author, subject, keywords and the applications that created it. Or remove all of them before sharing a file, so it doesn't reveal who wrote it or which software was used.

The details are read the moment you choose a file, and a new copy is saved with your changes. Nothing is uploaded.

How it works

PDFs keep these details in two places: a simple list of fields and, often, a second copy in a format called XMP. Many readers prefer the XMP copy, so if only the simple fields were edited, the old title could still appear. When you save, the XMP copy is removed so your changes are the ones readers show.

A field you clear is removed from the file rather than saved as blank text. Keywords are saved exactly as you type them.

Remove all details deletes every field, the XMP copy and the extra information some applications store on each page. The pages themselves are not changed.

Assumptions and limits

  • Password-protected PDFs need the password removed first.
  • The modification date is set to now when you save edited details.
  • Removing details doesn't remove names written on the pages themselves; use Redact PDF for that.

Worked examples

A proper title in search results

A report saved as "Microsoft Word - final_v7.docx" shows that name in browser tabs and search engines. Set the title to "Quarterly Sales Report Q3 2026" instead.

Before sending to a client

Remove all details so the file doesn't show the author's name, the company's template name or the editing software.

Keywords for a document library

Add keywords such as invoice, 2026, client name so the file is easier to find in document management systems.

How to use the PDF Metadata Editor

  1. Choose the PDF. Its details appear straight away.
  2. Edit or remove. Change fields or remove them all.
  3. Save the copy. Download the PDF with new details.

Frequently asked questions

What is PDF metadata?

It's information stored with the file but not shown on the pages: title, author, subject, keywords, the application that created it, and creation and modification dates. File managers, browsers and search engines often display it.

Why does my PDF show the wrong title in the browser tab?

Browsers show the PDF's title field when there is one, often left over from the original document's file name. Set a new title here and the browser tab will show it instead.

Does removing metadata change the pages?

No. Only the hidden details are removed. Text, images and layout stay exactly as they were. Names or dates printed on the pages themselves are page content and need Redact PDF to remove.

What is the XMP copy and why is it removed?

XMP is a second, more detailed copy of the document details used by Adobe software and many readers. If it stayed, readers could keep showing the old title, so it's removed when you save.

Can I see when the PDF was created?

Yes. The creation and last modified dates are shown under the fields as they are stored in the file. Dates can be wrong if the creating application's clock or settings were wrong.
