About the PDF to Excel
Turn the tables in a PDF, such as a bank statement, an invoice or a price list, into an Excel spreadsheet you can sort, filter and add up. Numbers come out as real numbers, not text.
Everything happens in your browser. The PDF isn't uploaded.
How it works
The tool reads where each piece of text sits on the page. Text on the same line becomes a row, and text that lines up vertically across rows becomes a column, so left-aligned names and right-aligned amounts both land in the right column, and empty cells stay empty.
Values like 1,234.56, (1,200), 12.5% or $1,200.00 become numbers with a matching format, so you can add them up straight away. Codes with leading zeros, such as 0300 or 00123, stay as text so the zeros aren't lost.
Assumptions and limits
- Works on PDFs that contain text, such as those saved from Excel, Word, accounting software or a bank's website. A scanned PDF has no text: run it through OCR PDF first.
- Cells that span several columns or rows, and text split over two lines inside one cell, may need tidying after conversion.
- Dates are kept as they were written, as text, because 01/02 means different dates in different countries.
- Files up to 100 MB.
Worked examples
A bank statement
Date, reference, debit, credit and balance columns come out as five columns; amounts like 1,500.00 are numbers you can sum, and empty debit or credit cells stay empty.
A sales report
A title line across the top stays in its own row, while the region, units and revenue columns line up underneath it, whether they're left- or right-aligned.
Several pages
Choose 'One sheet per page' to keep pages apart, or 'All pages in one sheet' to get one long table you can filter.
How to use the PDF to Excel
- Choose the PDF. One that contains text, not a scan.
- Pick the sheet layout. One sheet per page, or everything in one sheet.
- Download the .xlsx. Open it in Excel, Google Sheets or Numbers.
Frequently asked questions
Will the numbers work in formulas?
Yes. Amounts with thousands separators, currency symbols, percentages and accounting-style negatives in brackets are saved as real numbers with a matching format, so SUM and other formulas work straight away.
Why is my spreadsheet empty?
The PDF is probably a scan or a photo, which has no text to read. Run it through OCR PDF first to add a text layer, then convert that file to Excel.
Is my file uploaded?
No. The PDF is read and the spreadsheet is written by your browser, on your own device. Nothing from the file is sent to our server, so it stays private.
Does it keep colours, borders and merged cells?
No. You get the text and numbers in the right rows and columns, which is what most people need for sorting and totals. Formatting such as colours, borders and merged cells isn't carried over.
Which programs can open the file?
The download is a standard .xlsx workbook, so it opens in Microsoft Excel, Google Sheets, Apple Numbers and LibreOffice Calc on a computer, tablet or phone.
This tool runs entirely in your browser. What you enter or upload stays on your device and is never sent to our servers.
