About the Wi-Fi QR Code Generator
Make a QR code that lets guests join your Wi-Fi by pointing their phone camera at it, with no typing of long passwords. Enter the network name and password, then download the code or print a small card for the fridge, front desk or meeting room.
The code is generated in your browser. Your Wi-Fi password is never sent anywhere.
How it works
A Wi-Fi QR code contains a short piece of text in a widely supported format: WIFI:T:WPA;S:network name;P:password;;. T is the security type, S the network name, P the password, and H:true is added for hidden networks. Phone cameras recognise the format and offer to join the network.
Some characters have a special meaning in the format, so a backslash is put in front of them: \ ; , " and :. A password like a;b becomes a\;b inside the code. Without this, a semicolon in a password would cut it short and the phone would fail to connect.
The QR code uses error correction level M, which can still be read with about 15% of it damaged or covered.
WIFI:T:<WPA | WEP | nopass>;S:<name>;P:<password>;H:true;;
Assumptions and limits
- Choose WPA for WPA, WPA2 and WPA3 home networks; the format uses one type for all three. WEP is only for very old routers.
- Network names are case-sensitive and can be at most 32 bytes; WPA passwords are 8 to 63 characters.
- Enterprise networks that need a username (WPA2-Enterprise) aren't supported here.
Worked examples
A guest card at home
Enter your network name and password, press Show to include the password on the card, then Print card. Guests scan it with the camera app and tap the prompt to join.
A café or office reception
Download the PNG and add it to a menu, poster or welcome sign. The SVG option stays sharp at any size for printing large.
A password with symbols
A password such as 'Sun;Set:42,ok' is escaped inside the code automatically. You can see the exact text the code contains under 'Text inside the code'.
How to use the Wi-Fi QR Code Generator
- Enter the network details. Name exactly as shown on your devices, security type and password.
- Check the preview. Scan it with your own phone to make sure it connects.
- Download or print. PNG, SVG or a printable card.
Frequently asked questions
Which phones can scan a Wi-Fi QR code?
iPhones running iOS 11 or later can join from the Camera app, and most Android phones can from the camera or the Wi-Fi settings screen. Older phones may need a QR scanner app that supports Wi-Fi codes.
Is it safe to put my Wi-Fi password in a QR code?
The code contains the password in readable form, so anyone who scans it can join and read the password. Treat a printed code like the password itself, and consider a separate guest network for visitors.
What security type should I choose?
WPA for almost every modern router, including WPA2 and WPA3. Choose WEP only for very old equipment, and 'No password' for open networks. If unsure, check your router's Wi-Fi settings page.
The phone says it can't join. What's wrong?
Usually the network name or password differs slightly from the router's: check capital letters, spaces and look-alike characters. Hidden networks also need the 'hidden' box ticked so the phone knows to search for the name.
Does the QR code stop working if I change my password?
Yes. The password is stored inside the code, so make a new code after changing it. Nothing is saved on our side, so you'll need to enter the new details again.
