About the Audio Trimmer
Cut the part of a song, voice note, podcast or recording that you want to keep. Choose the file, drag the start and end over the waveform or type the exact times, listen to the selection, and download just that part.
Everything happens in your browser, so the recording is never uploaded. MP3, WAV, M4A, OGG, FLAC and most other audio files work, as well as videos whose sound you want a piece of, up to 100 MB.
How it works
When you choose a file, the audio engine reads it once to draw the waveform and find its exact length. The highlighted part between the two handles is what you keep; everything before the start and after the end is removed.
The cut is made on the decoded sound, sample by sample, so it lands exactly on the times shown rather than on the nearest block of the compressed file. Times are shown to a hundredth of a second, and you can type them as minutes and seconds (1:05.5) or as seconds (65.5).
The kept part is saved in the same format as the original when that format can be written (MP3, M4A, WAV, FLAC or OGG), or as MP3 otherwise. You can pick another format before trimming.
Assumptions and limits
- Compressed formats are encoded again after the cut: MP3, M4A and OGG at 192 kbps. Choose WAV or FLAC to keep every detail.
- Only the first sound track of a file is used, and a video's picture is dropped.
- The browser's own player is used for listening, so a few formats (such as WMA) can be trimmed but not previewed.
Worked examples
A ringtone from a song
Drag the handles around the chorus, for example from 0:45.00 to 1:15.00, play the selection to check it, and save the 30 seconds as an MP3 or M4A.
A voice note without the silence
Move the start past the first two seconds of rustling and the end before the button press, then download the cleaned-up clip.
One question from a recorded interview
Type 12:30 and 14:05.5 as the start and end to save exactly that answer from an hour-long WAV.
How to use the Audio Trimmer
- Choose the recording. Any audio file, or a video, up to 100 MB.
- Mark what to keep. Drag over the waveform or type the times.
- Save the selection. Listen, then download the trimmed file.
Frequently asked questions
How do I trim an MP3 without uploading it?
Choose the MP3 on this page, drag the start and end handles over the waveform or type the times, then press Trim audio. The cutting runs inside your browser with FFmpeg, so the file never leaves your phone or computer.
How exact is the cut?
The cut is made on the decoded sound to the sample, so a selection from 2.00 to 4.00 seconds gives exactly two seconds of audio. Times can be typed to a hundredth of a second, which is finer than anyone can hear.
Does trimming lower the quality?
A WAV or FLAC file keeps every detail. MP3, M4A and OGG files are compressed again after the cut at 192 kbps, which sounds the same as the original for nearly all recordings; save as WAV if you plan to edit the clip further.
Can I cut the audio out of a video?
Yes. Choose an MP4, MOV, WebM or other video and the trimmer works on its sound track. The picture is dropped and the part you select is saved as audio, as MP3 unless you pick another format.
Why can't I play the selection before saving?
Listening uses your browser's built-in player, and some browsers can't play every format, such as WMA or some OGG files on older iPhones. You can still trim those files; the saved result is in a format that plays almost everywhere.
