About the eBay Fee Calculator

Work out eBay's fees and your real profit before you list. Choose eBay.com or eBay.co.uk, pick the category, enter the price and postage, and see every fee line, what eBay pays out and what you keep after your costs.

The calculator uses eBay's current category rates, including the categories where the rate changes above a price, the per-order fee, the UK regulatory operating fee, international fees and VAT on UK fees.

How it works

eBay's main charge is the final value fee: a percentage of the total amount of the sale, which includes the item price and the postage the buyer pays. On eBay.com it is also charged on the sales tax the buyer pays, so the calculator adds the tax before working out the fee, then leaves it out of your payout because it goes to the state.

Some categories use bands. In most US categories 13.6% applies up to $7,500 and 2.35% only to the part above it; for women's handbags, jewelry, bullion and athletic shoes one rate applies to the whole price depending on which side of the limit it falls. Each band is applied exactly the way eBay describes it.

On top comes a per-order fee of 30 cents or pence for orders of 10 or less and 40 above. UK business sellers also pay a 0.35% regulatory operating fee, and eBay's UK fees are quoted without VAT, so 20% is added unless you switch it off.

Assumptions and limits

  • One item sold on its own, so the per-order fee is counted once.
  • Promoted listing fees, below-standard surcharges and listing fees beyond your free monthly allowance aren't included.
  • Each fee is rounded to the cent or penny, as it appears on eBay's invoice.

Worked examples

A $50 item with $10 shipping

In most categories the final value fee is 13.6% of $60 = $8.16, plus a $0.40 per-order fee: $8.56 in fees, leaving $51.44 before your own costs.

A £1,200 smartphone in the UK

Business sellers pay 6.9% on the first £1,000 and 3% on the remaining £200 (£75), plus £0.40 and the 0.35% regulatory fee (£4.20): £79.60 before VAT.

Trainers at $150

Athletic shoes sold for $150 or more pay 8% with no per-order fee, so the fee is $12.00. At $149.99 it would be 13.6% plus $0.40.

Frequently asked questions

How much does eBay take from a sale?

In most US categories eBay takes 13.6% of the total the buyer pays, including shipping and sales tax, plus 30 or 40 cents per order. UK business sellers pay from 6.9% to 14.9% in most categories, plus the per-order fee and 0.35% regulatory fee.

Do private sellers pay fees on eBay UK?

Private sellers based in the UK don't pay final value fees or the regulatory operating fee on most items, apart from cars, motorcycles and vehicles. A 3% international fee applies when the buyer's delivery address is outside the UK.

Does eBay charge fees on shipping and sales tax?

Yes. The final value fee is a percentage of the total amount of the sale, which includes the postage the buyer pays and, on eBay.com, the sales tax. Charging more for postage therefore also increases the fee.

Why is VAT added to the UK fees?

eBay quotes its UK business fees without VAT and charges 20% VAT on them. If your business is VAT-registered you can usually reclaim it, so you can switch the VAT option off to see the fees without it.

What isn't included in the result?

Promoted listing ad fees, extra charges for below-standard sellers, listing fees after your free allowance and the reduced 10p per-order fee in some UK categories. Add any of these you pay under Other costs to keep the profit accurate.
