About the KG to LBS Converter

Convert kilograms to pounds or pounds to kilograms, using the exact legal definition of the pound. Each answer also comes in stones and pounds, the usual way to give body weight in the UK and Ireland, and in pounds and ounces for baby weights and cooking.

Press Swap to go from pounds to kilograms; you can type stones and pounds together, such as 11 st 4 lb.

How it works

The international pound is defined as exactly 0.45359237 kilograms. To turn kilograms into pounds the calculator divides by that number, and to turn pounds into kilograms it multiplies. The often-quoted 2.2046 pounds per kilogram is a rounded form of 1 ÷ 0.45359237.

The arithmetic is exact decimal arithmetic, rounded once at the end. A stone is 14 pounds and a pound is 16 ounces, so the extra lines split the answer by those whole numbers.

pounds = kilograms ÷ 0.45359237
kilograms = pounds × 0.45359237
stones = whole part of (pounds ÷ 14), with the pounds left over

Multiplying by 2.2 is a handy shortcut but undercounts by about 0.2%: it gives 220 lb for 100 kg instead of 220.46 lb.

Assumptions and limits

  • Pounds are avoirdupois pounds, the everyday pound for body weight, food and luggage. Troy pounds (used for precious metals) are different and not used here.
  • Stones-and-pounds results round the pounds to 2 decimals; if that reaches 14, it becomes the next whole stone.
  • These are units of mass. Kitchen and bathroom scales show mass in either unit, so the conversion applies directly.

Worked examples

Body weight of 70 kg

70 ÷ 0.45359237 = 154.32 lb. A stone is 14 lb and 11 stones are 154 lb, so 70 kg is 11 st 0.32 lb, which most people would round to 11 stone.

A 23 kg checked-bag limit

Many airlines allow 23 kg in a checked bag and often print it as 50 lb. The two aren't quite equal: 23 kg is 50.71 lb, while 50 lb is 22.68 kg. If a limit is given in both units, packing to the smaller one, 50 lb, keeps you under both.

A newborn's weight of 3.5 kg

3.5 ÷ 0.45359237 = 7.716 lb, which is 7 lb and 0.716 × 16 = 11.46 oz. Birth weights in pounds are usually given in this form: 7 lb 11.5 oz.

Frequently asked questions

How many pounds are in a kilogram?

About 2.20462 pounds. The exact relationship is the other way round: one pound is defined as 0.45359237 kg, so a kilogram is 1 ÷ 0.45359237 = 2.2046226… pounds, a number that never ends.

How do I convert kg to stones and pounds?

Convert to pounds first, then divide by 14. The whole number is the stones and the remainder is the pounds: 80 kg is 176.37 lb, which is 12 stones (168 lb) and 8.37 lb.

Is 'lbs' the same as 'lb'?

Yes. Both are short for the Latin libra, the origin of the pound symbol. 'lb' is the standard abbreviation for both one and many pounds, but 'lbs' is common in everyday writing and means the same thing.

Why is my answer slightly different from multiplying by 2.2?

2.2 is a rounded factor, about 0.2% too small. For a 90 kg person it gives 198 lb instead of 198.42 lb; the difference is small for one reading but adds up if you are tracking weight change over time.

Can I convert ounces or grams here?
