Question 1

Should I tip on the pre-tax or post-tax amount?

Accepted Answer

Tip on the pre-tax subtotal — tipping on tax means you're giving more than intended. However, many people tip on the total amount for convenience. Either is acceptable.

Question 2

What is the standard tip percentage in the USA?

Accepted Answer

15% for adequate service, 18-20% for good service, 25%+ for exceptional service. For buffets: 10%. For takeout: optional 5-10%. For delivery: $3-5 minimum or 15-20%.
