About the Trading Profit Calculator

Calculate the profit or loss of a trade: forex in pips and in your account currency, or stocks and crypto with buying and selling fees. Works for buys and short sells.

For shares and coins it also shows the exit price at which the trade breaks even once fees are paid.

How it works

For forex, the price change times the position size gives the result in the pair's quote currency; a sell reverses the sign. It's then turned into your account currency: unchanged if the quote currency is your account currency, divided by the closing price if the base currency is, or multiplied by the rate you enter for other pairs.

For stocks and crypto, profit is the exit value minus the entry value (the other way round for a short sale), less fees. Each side of the trade pays the percentage fee on its own value plus any flat fee, which is how most brokers and exchanges charge.

Assumptions and limits

  • Overnight swap or funding fees and spreads aren't included.
  • Taxes on gains aren't included.
  • For planning only, not financial advice.

Frequently asked questions

How is forex profit calculated?

Multiply the price change by the number of units, then convert the result from the quote currency to your account currency. One standard lot of EUR/USD moving 50 pips is 0.0050 × 100,000 = $500.

Why does USD/JPY profit use the closing price?

The profit is earned in yen, and in a dollar account it's converted back at the rate when you close. ¥100,000 at 151.00 is $662.25, which is what the broker credits.

How are trading fees counted?

The percentage fee is charged on both the buy and the sell value, and the flat fee once on each side. That matches the usual commission model of stock brokers and crypto exchanges.

What is the break-even exit price?

It's the price at which selling gives exactly zero after both fees. Above it a buy makes money; below it the fees turn a small rise into a loss.

Does it work for short selling?

Yes. Choose Sell: profit is the entry value minus the exit value, so a fall in price is a gain. Borrowing costs for shorting shares aren't included in the result.
