About the Excel to JSON
Convert an Excel workbook (.xlsx) to JSON: each row becomes an object named after the header row, with numbers kept as numbers and dates written in the standard YYYY-MM-DD form.
Choose one sheet or get every sheet at once, then copy the JSON or download it as a .json file.
How it works
The tool finds the part of each sheet that holds data, so a table that starts lower down or further right is picked up without any setup, and empty rows inside the table are skipped. The first row gives the names; later rows become objects.
Values keep the type Excel stored. A price formatted as $1,200 is the number 1200 and 12.5% is 0.125, because that is what the cell really holds. Dates become text like 2026-10-15 or 2026-10-15T09:30:00, and a formula gives the result Excel saved with the file.
If you would rather have exactly what you see on screen, tick 'Values as shown in Excel': every value is then the formatted text, such as "$1,200" or "15/10/2026".
Assumptions and limits
- Only .xlsx workbooks can be opened. An older .xls file needs saving as .xlsx first; CSV files have their own CSV to JSON tool.
- A merged area gives its value once, in its top-left cell; the other cells of the area are empty.
- Formulas are not recalculated. A file made by a script rather than Excel may have formulas with no saved result, which come out as null.
Worked examples
A product list
A sheet with SKU, Name and Price columns becomes [{"SKU": "A-100", "Name": "Desk lamp", "Price": 24.99}, …], ready to import into a website or an app.
A workbook with several sheets
Choose 'All sheets' to get {"Sales": [...], "Staff": [...]} with one list per sheet, named exactly as the sheet tabs are.
Dates for an API
An Excel date shown as 15/10/2026 comes out as "2026-10-15", which every programming language reads the same way.
How to use the Excel to JSON
- Choose the .xlsx file. Or drop it on the box.
- Pick the sheet and options. One sheet or all, header row, shown values.
- Take the JSON. Copy it to the clipboard or download a .json file.
Frequently asked questions
Why is my percentage a decimal in the JSON?
Excel stores 12.5% as 0.125 and only shows it with a percent sign. The JSON gives the stored number so calculations stay correct; tick 'Values as shown in Excel' if you want the text "12.5%" instead.
How are dates converted?
Dates become ISO 8601 text such as 2026-10-15, with the time added when the cell has one, for example 2026-10-15T09:30:00. Excel doesn't record a time zone, so none is added to the text.
Can I convert an .xls file?
Not directly. Open the old .xls file in Excel, Google Sheets, LibreOffice or Numbers, save or download it as .xlsx, and then open that new file here. The conversion then works as normal.
What happens with formulas?
You get the result Excel saved the last time the file was saved, not the formula itself. If a file was written by another program without saved results, those cells are null and the page tells you how many.
Is my spreadsheet uploaded?
No. The workbook is opened and converted by your browser on this device and nothing is sent to a server, so it's safe for price lists, payroll and customer data.
This tool runs entirely in your browser. What you enter or upload stays on your device and is never sent to our servers.
