About the Forex Swap Calculator
Estimate the swap (overnight financing) you pay or earn for keeping a forex or gold position open. Enter the swap rate your broker shows for your direction, the lot size and how many nights you'll hold it, and the page counts the triple-swap day for you.
Swap can be small for one night but adds up over weeks: on some pairs it decides whether a long-term trade makes money at all. The night-by-night table shows exactly which nights were charged and which counted three times.
How it works
Most platforms, including MetaTrader 4 and 5, show swap in points. A point is a tenth of a pip: 0.00001 for most pairs, 0.001 for JPY pairs and 0.01 for gold. One night's swap is the swap in points times the point size times the units per lot (100,000 for a standard forex lot, 100 ounces for gold) times your lots, turned into your account currency.
Some brokers quote swap as an annual percentage instead. Then one day's swap is the position's value times the rate, divided by 365 (or 360, depending on the broker).
Positions are rolled over at 5 pm New York time, Monday to Friday. Saturday and Sunday nights aren't charged; instead one weekday, Wednesday for forex, is charged three times. A trade held for a full week is therefore charged seven days.
Assumptions and limits
- Use the swap for your direction: long and short swaps differ, and a minus sign means you pay.
- Some instruments, such as indices or crypto, have their triple day on Friday; choose it in the triple swap day box.
- Swap rates change with interest rates and are set by each broker; copy today's from your platform's symbol specification.
Worked examples
A week of EUR/USD
1 lot at −6.5 points: −6.5 × 0.00001 × 100,000 = −$6.50 a day, × 7 days = −$45.50.
Gold over Wednesday
2 lots at −35.2 points: −35.2 × 0.01 × 100 × 2 = −$70.40 a day; a Wednesday night alone costs 3 days, −$211.20.
Opened on Friday
Held Friday, Saturday and Sunday nights, a trade is charged one day: Friday's rollover only.
How to use the Forex Swap Calculator

Frequently asked questions
What is swap in forex?
Swap is the interest paid or earned for holding a position past the daily rollover at 5 pm New York time. It comes from the interest rate difference between the two currencies plus the broker's markup, so it can be negative on both sides of a pair.
Why is swap charged three times on Wednesday?
Forex trades settle two business days later. Rolling over on Wednesday moves settlement from Friday to Monday, across the weekend, so three days of interest are charged at once. In exchange, Saturday and Sunday nights aren't charged at all.
How do I calculate swap in MetaTrader?
Take the swap long or swap short value from the symbol's specification (it's in points), then multiply by the point size, the contract size and your lots. For EUR/USD, −6.5 points on one lot is −6.5 × 0.00001 × 100,000 = −$6.50 a night.
Can swap be positive?
Yes. When you hold the currency with the higher interest rate against the one with the lower rate, and the difference is larger than the broker's markup, you earn swap each night. The sign of the broker's rate tells you which.
Do Islamic (swap-free) accounts pay swap?
Swap-free accounts don't charge or pay overnight interest, but many brokers charge a fixed administration fee after a number of nights instead. Check your broker's terms; this calculator covers ordinary swap only.
