About the Gold Profit Calculator (XAUUSD)
Work out the profit or loss of a gold (XAUUSD) trade from the open and close price and your lot size. Enter a buy or a sell, the prices in dollars per ounce and the lots, and see the result in money, in pips and per ounce, with commission taken off.
Gold is quoted in US dollars per troy ounce and one standard lot is usually 100 ounces, so a $1 move is worth $100 a lot. The contract size, the pip definition and your account currency can all be changed to match your broker.
How it works
Profit is the price move times the number of ounces you hold. For a buy the move is the closing price minus the opening price; for a sell it is the other way round. The ounces are your lots times the contract size, so 0.5 lot of a 100-ounce contract is 50 ounces, and a $9.75 move on it is worth $487.50.
Brokers don't agree on what a pip is for gold. Many count $0.10 as one pip (so one pip on a standard lot is $10, like most forex pairs), while some count $0.01. The calculator shows both the dollar move and the pips for the definition you choose, so the money figure never depends on that choice.
If your account isn't in dollars, the dollar result is multiplied by today's USD rate to your account currency. Commission is entered per lot for the whole trade (opening and closing) and is taken off the profit.
Assumptions and limits
- Swap (overnight financing) and the spread aren't included; use the Forex Swap and Spread calculators for those.
- The contract size is 100 oz unless you change it; some brokers offer 10 oz or 1 oz contracts, or cent accounts.
- Prices are dollars per troy ounce, the way XAUUSD is quoted on MetaTrader and most platforms.
Worked examples
Buy 1 lot
Opened at 2,650.00 and closed at 2,655.50: $5.50 × 100 oz = $550 profit, or 55 pips of $10.
Sell 0.5 lot
Sold at 2,700.00 and bought back at 2,690.25: $9.75 × 50 oz = $487.50 profit.
A small loss
0.01 lot is 1 ounce, so a buy at 2,000 closed at 1,990 loses $10.

Frequently asked questions
How much is 1 pip in gold?
With a $0.10 pip and a 100-ounce lot, one pip is worth $10 on a standard lot, $1 on 0.1 lot and $0.10 on 0.01 lot. If your broker counts $0.01 as a pip, each pip is worth a tenth of that.
How do I calculate gold profit for 0.01 lot?
0.01 lot of a 100-ounce contract is 1 ounce, so the profit is simply the price move in dollars: a $12 rise on a buy earns $12, and a $5 fall on a buy loses $5, before commission.
What is the contract size of XAUUSD?
Most brokers use 100 troy ounces per standard lot, but not all: some offer 10-ounce or 1-ounce contracts. You can find it in your platform's symbol specification, and you can type it in the contract size field.
Does the calculator include swap and spread?
No. The spread is paid when you open the trade and swap is charged for each night it stays open. Both depend on your broker, so they're left out here; the Spread and Forex Swap calculators work them out separately.
Why is my broker's profit slightly different?
Brokers close a buy at the bid price and a sell at the ask, so the closing price you see on the chart may not be the price you got. Commission, swap and rounding of the account currency can also make small differences.
