About the Pitch Shifter
Raise or lower the pitch of a song, voice or instrument recording without changing its speed. Move a song into a key you can sing, tune a backing track to your guitar, or make a voice deeper or higher. Choose the file, set the semitones and download the result.
From one octave down (−12) to one octave up (+12), in semitones or smaller steps. It runs in your browser, so the file is never uploaded, up to 100 MB.
How it works
A semitone is the step between two neighbouring keys on a piano. Each semitone multiplies every frequency by the twelfth root of two, about 1.0595, so +12 semitones doubles the frequency (one octave up) and −12 halves it. A 440 Hz A moved up 3 semitones becomes 523.25 Hz, a C.
To change the pitch alone, the samples are first played faster or slower by that ratio, which shifts the pitch and also changes the length. The audio is then time-stretched back to its original length, so the tempo is the same as before and only the pitch has moved.
The result is saved at 48 kHz in the original format when it can be written, or as MP3.
Assumptions and limits
- From −12 to +12 semitones; decimals such as 0.5 work for fine tuning (50 cents).
- The length stays the same to within a few hundredths of a second.
- Big shifts change the character of a voice: up sounds thinner, down sounds deeper, since the whole sound moves.
Worked examples
A song in a lower key
−2 semitones moves a song from E to D, which can make the high notes easier to sing.
Tuning to a band
A recording that is a quarter-tone flat can be raised by 0.5 semitones to match instruments tuned to A = 440 Hz.
One octave up
+12 semitones turns a 220 Hz note into 440 Hz at the same tempo.
How to use the Pitch Shifter
- Select your audio. A song, voice or instrument track.
- Set the semitones. Up to an octave higher or lower.
- Get the new key. Same tempo, shifted pitch.
Frequently asked questions
How do I change the pitch of a song without changing the speed?
Choose the song, enter the semitones (for example −2 to go down a whole step) and press Change the pitch. The sound is shifted and then time-stretched back, so the tempo and length stay as they were.
How many semitones should I shift to change key?
Count the piano keys, black and white, between the two keys. From C to D is +2, from E to C is −4, and a full octave is 12. The page shows how much any shift multiplies the frequencies.
What is the difference between pitch and speed?
Pitch is how high or low a sound is; speed is how fast it plays. Playing a tape faster raises both together. This tool changes only the pitch, and the speed changer changes only the speed.
Can I make my voice deeper with this?
Yes. A shift of −3 to −5 semitones makes most voices sound clearly deeper while still natural. Large shifts beyond about 7 semitones start to sound artificial, because the voice's natural tone colour moves along with the pitch.
Can I shift by less than a semitone?
Yes. Type a decimal such as 0.5 for half a semitone (50 cents) or 0.25 for a quarter. This helps when a recording was made with instruments tuned slightly sharp or flat.
