About the Fibonacci Calculator
Calculate Fibonacci retracement and extension levels from a swing high and swing low, for an uptrend or a downtrend. Traders use these levels to look for possible pullback zones and targets in forex, stocks and crypto.
Levels are shown to one more decimal place than your prices.
How it works
In an uptrend the move runs from the swing low to the swing high. A retracement level is the high minus that move times the ratio: the 61.8% level of a move from 1.1000 to 1.2000 is 1.2000 − 0.1000 × 0.618 = 1.1382. Extension levels project beyond the high: 161.8% is 1.1000 + 0.1000 × 1.618 = 1.2618.
In a downtrend everything is mirrored: retracements are measured up from the low and extensions project below it. The ratios used are 23.6%, 38.2%, 50%, 61.8% and 78.6% for retracements and 127.2%, 141.4%, 161.8%, 200% and 261.8% for extensions.
Assumptions and limits
- The 50% level isn't a Fibonacci ratio but is included because traders watch it.
- Fibonacci levels describe possible areas of interest, not predictions.
- For planning only, not financial advice.
Worked examples
EUR/USD
A rise from 1.1000 to 1.2000 has retracement levels at 1.1764, 1.1618, 1.1500, 1.1382 and 1.1214.
A stock
A rise from $100 to $150: the 61.8% retracement is $119.10 and the 161.8% extension $180.90.
A downtrend
A fall from 1.2000 to 1.1000: the 61.8% retracement is 1.1618, back up from the low.
How to use the Fibonacci Calculator
- Choose the trend. Up or down.
- Enter the swing high and low. The two ends of the move.
- Read the levels. Retracements and extensions.
Frequently asked questions
How are Fibonacci retracement levels calculated?
Take the size of the move from swing low to swing high and multiply it by each ratio. In an uptrend subtract the result from the high; in a downtrend add it to the low.
Which Fibonacci levels matter most?
Many traders watch 38.2%, 50% and 61.8% most closely for pullbacks, and 161.8% for targets. No level is guaranteed to hold; they are areas to watch rather than certain turning points.
What is the difference between retracement and extension?
Retracements fall inside the move and show how far a pullback might go. Extensions lie beyond the swing high in an uptrend, or below the low in a downtrend, and are used for targets.
Which swing high and low should I use?
Use the clear turning points of the move you're studying on your chart, such as the last major low and high. Different choices give different levels, which is why traders agree on them only roughly.
Why is 50% included?
It isn't part of the Fibonacci sequence, but a half-way pullback is widely watched by traders, so most charting platforms show it alongside the Fibonacci ratios.
