About the Funding Rate Calculator
Work out how much funding you pay or receive on a perpetual futures position. Enter long or short, the size and mark price, the funding rate shown by your exchange and how long you plan to hold, and see the amount per payment, per day, for the whole period and as a yearly rate.
It works for any exchange and any interval: every 8 hours on most exchanges, and 4 hours or 1 hour on some pairs.
How it works
Perpetual futures have no expiry, so exchanges keep their price close to the spot price with funding payments between traders. Each payment is the position's value times the funding rate: 1 BTC at 60,000 with a rate of 0.01% pays 6 USDT.
When the rate is positive, longs pay shorts; when it is negative, shorts pay longs. The page shows whether you pay or receive for the side you choose.
Over a day there are 24 ÷ interval payments, 3 on an 8-hour schedule. A rate of 0.01% every 8 hours adds up to 0.03% a day and 10.95% a year if it stayed the same, which shows how much funding can cost on a long-term leveraged position.
Assumptions and limits
- One rate is used for the whole period; real rates change at every payment.
- A payment is made only if you hold the position at the funding time; opening just after one avoids it.
- The position value uses the mark price you enter; it changes as the price moves.
Worked examples
A week long on BTC
1 BTC at 60,000 and 0.01% every 8 hours: 6 USDT a payment, 18 a day, 126 for seven days.
A negative rate
2 ETH at 3,000 with a rate of −0.02%: longs receive 1.20 USDT each payment.
1-hour funding
A 10,000 USDT position at 0.005% an hour pays 0.50 each hour, 12 a day.
How to use the Funding Rate Calculator
- Enter the position. Long or short, size and mark price.
- Add the funding rate. And how often it is paid.
- Set the days held. Then read what you pay or receive.
Frequently asked questions
How is the funding fee calculated?
Multiply the position value by the funding rate. A position worth 60,000 USDT with a rate of 0.01% pays or receives 6 USDT at each funding time, depending on whether the rate is positive or negative and which side you are on.
Who pays funding, longs or shorts?
When the funding rate is positive, longs pay shorts, which happens when the futures price is above spot. When it is negative, shorts pay longs. The exchange passes the money between traders and keeps no share of it.
How often is funding paid?
On most exchanges every 8 hours, at 00:00, 08:00 and 16:00 UTC. Some pairs settle every 4 hours or every hour, especially when the rate is extreme. Check the funding countdown on your exchange's trading page.
Do I pay funding if I close before the funding time?
No. Funding is paid only by positions open at the exact funding time. Closing a minute before avoids it, and opening a minute after means the first payment is a full interval away.
What does the yearly rate mean?
It is the funding rate per payment times the number of payments in a year, assuming the rate never changed. It is useful for comparing funding with other costs, but real rates swing a lot from one payment to the next.
