Remove the sound from a video in seconds, with the picture copied unchanged, in your browser. Up to 100 MB.

Runs in your browser. Files never leave your device.
Choose a videoMP4, MOV, WebM, MKV, AVI and more · up to 100 MB · processed on your device, never uploaded

The video engine (about 10 MB) downloads the first time you use one of these tools; after that your browser keeps it. Videos are processed on your device, so a long or high-resolution video can take a few minutes.

About the Mute Video

Remove the sound from a video. Choose the video and download a silent copy, with the picture exactly as it was, in seconds.

It runs in your browser, so the video is never uploaded. MP4, MOV, WebM, MKV and other common formats up to 100 MB work, and the silent video keeps the original format.

How it works

The video's picture is copied into a new file without being re-encoded, and every sound track is left out. Because nothing is re-encoded, the picture keeps exactly the same quality and the job takes a moment even for a long video.

The silent video keeps the original container: an MP4 stays an MP4, a MOV stays a MOV, and so on. Formats that can't be copied as they are, such as AVI, are saved as MKV, which plays in VLC and most modern players.

Removing the sound also makes the file a little smaller, by the size of the audio track it carried.

Assumptions and limits

  • All sound tracks are removed; subtitles and other extra tracks aren't kept.
  • The picture isn't changed in any way: same resolution, frame rate and quality.
  • If the video has no sound already, the copy is the same video.

Frequently asked questions

How do I remove the audio from a video?

Choose the video and press Remove sound. A silent copy is made in seconds, with the picture unchanged, and you can download it straight away. The original file on your device isn't changed.

Does muting a video reduce its quality?

No. The picture is copied without re-encoding, so the resolution, frame rate and quality stay exactly the same; only the sound tracks are left out of the new file.

Why is my muted MKV saved instead of AVI?

Some formats can't hold a copied picture as they are, so the video is saved as MKV, which takes any video unchanged and plays in VLC and most modern players, without re-encoding.

Can I replace the sound with music?

This tool only removes the sound. Mute the video here, then add music in a video editor; you can prepare the music first with the audio trimmer and volume booster.

Is the muted video uploaded anywhere?

No. Everything happens in your browser on your own device, so the video is never sent to a server. That also makes it fast, since nothing needs to be uploaded or downloaded.

This tool runs entirely in your browser. What you enter or upload stays on your device and is never sent to our servers.
