Video Trimmer

Cut a video to the part you want, exactly to the frame or instantly without re-encoding, in your browser. Up to 100 MB.

Runs in your browser. Files never leave your device.
Choose a videoMP4, MOV, WebM, MKV, AVI and more · up to 100 MB · processed on your device, never uploaded

The video engine (about 10 MB) downloads the first time you use one of these tools; after that your browser keeps it. Videos are processed on your device, so a long or high-resolution video can take a few minutes.

About the Video Trimmer

Cut a video down to the part you want. Choose the video, play it to find where the clip should start and end, set the two times and download the trimmed video.

Trimming happens in your browser, so the video is never uploaded. It works with MP4, MOV, WebM, MKV, AVI and other common formats up to 100 MB, with two ways to cut: exact or fast.

How it works

Play the video in the preview and press "Use the player's time" to set the start or the end, or type the times as minutes and seconds such as 1:05.5. The length of the clip is shown as you go.

Exact cutting re-encodes the clip as an MP4, so it starts on exactly the frame you chose. It takes longer, because every frame of the clip is encoded again, but the start and end are precise.

Fast cutting copies the video and sound as they are, with no re-encoding: it's done in seconds and the quality is unchanged. Compressed video can only start cleanly on a keyframe, so a fast cut begins at the keyframe at or just before your start time, which can be up to a few seconds early.

Assumptions and limits

  • Exact cuts are saved as MP4; fast cuts keep the original format (MP4, MOV, MKV or WebM), and other formats are saved as MKV.
  • If your browser can't play a format (some MKV and AVI files), there's no preview, but you can still type the times.
  • Only the first video and sound track are kept.

Worked examples

A clip for social media

Set the start to 0:12 and the end to 0:42 for a 30-second clip, and choose Exact so it starts on the right frame.

Cut off the beginning

Set the start to where the action begins and leave the end at the video's length.

A quick cut of a long video

Choose Fast to keep part of a long recording in seconds, without re-encoding it.

How to use the Video Trimmer

  1. Choose the video. Up to 100 MB; it plays in the preview.
  2. Set the start and end. From the player or typed as minutes and seconds.
  3. Trim and download. Exact for a precise start, Fast for speed and the same quality.

Frequently asked questions

How do I cut a part of a video?

Choose the video, play it in the preview and set the start and end with "Use the player's time", or type them. Then press Trim video and download the clip; the length is shown before you trim.

What's the difference between exact and fast trimming?

Exact re-encodes the clip so it starts on the frame you chose; it takes longer. Fast copies the video without re-encoding, so it's instant and keeps the quality, but may start a little early, at the previous keyframe.

Does trimming reduce the video quality?

Fast trimming doesn't change the quality at all, because the video isn't re-encoded. Exact trimming re-encodes at a high quality setting, so the difference is very hard to see.

Can I trim a video on my phone?

Yes. The trimmer works in mobile browsers: choose a video from your gallery, play it to find the times and download the clip. Long or high-resolution videos take longer to cut exactly on a phone.

Why does my fast cut start earlier than the time I set?

Compressed video stores complete pictures only now and then, at keyframes, and a copy without re-encoding has to start on one. Choose Exact if the clip must start on a precise frame.
