About the Resize Video for Instagram, TikTok and YouTube

Resize a video for TikTok, Instagram Reels, YouTube Shorts, Stories, the Instagram feed or YouTube. Choose the video, pick the shape, decide how it should fit and download a video at the right size.

It all happens in your browser, so the video is never uploaded. MP4, MOV, WebM, MKV and other formats up to 100 MB work, and the result is an MP4 at the exact size each platform expects.

How it works

Each shape has the size the platforms recommend: 1080 × 1920 for 9:16 vertical video, 1080 × 1080 square, 1080 × 1350 for 4:5 portrait posts and 1920 × 1080 for 16:9 landscape. The Faster option makes a 720p version of the same shape.

Fit with a blurred background keeps the whole video and fills the empty space with an enlarged, blurred copy of it, the look you see on many Reels made from landscape clips. Fit with a plain background adds black or white bars instead.

Fill and crop enlarges the video until it covers the whole frame and cuts off what doesn't fit, so there are no bars but the edges of the picture are lost. A landscape video cropped to 9:16 keeps only its middle.

Assumptions and limits

  • The result is MP4 with H.264 video and AAC sound, which every platform accepts.
  • Resizing re-encodes the video on your device; 720p is faster than Full HD for long videos.
  • A small video enlarged to 1080p won't gain detail; it's scaled up to the size the platform wants.

Worked examples

A landscape clip for Reels

Choose 9:16 and Fit, blurred background: the whole clip stays visible, centred on a blurred copy of itself.

A square post

Choose 1:1 and Fill and crop to fill the square with the middle of the video.

A vertical phone video for YouTube

Choose 16:9 with a black background to keep the whole picture between bars.

Frequently asked questions

What size should a TikTok or Instagram Reel be?

Vertical 9:16 at 1080 × 1920 pixels. Choose 9:16, and Fit with a blurred background if your video is landscape, so nothing is cut off and the frame is still filled.

How do I make a video square for Instagram?

Choose 1:1 square. Fill and crop fills the square with the middle of your video; the Fit options keep the whole picture with a blurred or plain background around it.

What does the blurred background option do?

It places your whole video in the middle and fills the empty space with an enlarged, blurred copy of the same video, so there are no black bars and nothing is cropped.

Will resizing make my video blurry?

Shrinking keeps it sharp. Enlarging a small video, for example 480p to 1080p, can't add detail that wasn't recorded, so it may look softer; it still plays at the size the platform wants.

Which size is right for YouTube?

16:9 landscape at 1920 × 1080 for normal videos, and 9:16 vertical at 1080 × 1920 for YouTube Shorts. Both are among the shapes you can pick.
