About the Video to GIF Converter
Turn a part of a video into an animated GIF. Choose the video, pick where the GIF starts and how long it lasts, set the frame rate and width, and download a looping GIF.
The GIF is made in your browser, so the video is never uploaded. MP4, MOV, WebM and most other video files up to 100 MB work, and the GIF can be up to 30 seconds long.
How it works
Set the start from the preview player or type it, and the length in seconds. The clip is resized to the width you pick, keeping its shape, and sampled at the frame rate you choose: 12 frames per second looks smooth for most clips.
A GIF can show only 256 colours in each frame. To keep colours true, a palette of the 256 colours that best fit your clip is made first, and every frame is then drawn with that palette, with light dithering so gradients don't band.
The GIF loops forever, the way GIFs are shown in chats and on websites. Only the changed parts of each frame are stored, which keeps the file smaller when the background stays still.
Assumptions and limits
- GIFs have no sound; the video's sound is left out.
- GIF files grow quickly with width, frame rate and length. For long clips a short video often makes a smaller file than a GIF.
- A video narrower than the chosen width keeps its own width.
Worked examples
A reaction GIF
A 3-second clip at 12 frames per second and 480 px wide makes a smooth GIF for chats.
A small GIF for a website
Use 320 px and 10 frames per second to keep the file light.
A product demo
A 10-second screen recording at 640 px shows the steps clearly; fewer frames per second keep it smaller.
How to use the Video to GIF Converter

Frequently asked questions
How do I make a GIF from a video?
Choose the video, set where the GIF should start and how many seconds it lasts, pick the frame rate and width, and press Make GIF. The GIF appears on the page, ready to download.
How long can the GIF be?
Up to 30 seconds. GIFs get large quickly, so short clips of 2 to 6 seconds work best for chats and social media; for longer moments a short MP4 is usually smaller.
How can I make my GIF smaller?
Lower the width, use fewer frames per second or shorten the clip. Going from 640 to 320 px wide stores a quarter as many pixels in every frame, which shrinks the file the most.
Why do GIF colours look different from the video?
A GIF frame can only hold 256 colours. The converter picks the 256 that best match your clip and dithers lightly, which keeps colours close, but smooth gradients can still show slight banding.
Does the GIF have sound?
No. The GIF format can't carry sound, so only the picture is converted. If you need sound, trim the video instead and share the short clip as a video file.
